Phos Hilaron [Hail Gladdening Light]
About
From Church Music magazine 'Phos Hilaron (Φῶς Ἱλαρόν) is the earliest known Christian hymn, outside of Holy Scripture, still in use today. It was originally written in New Testament Greek and is referred to in English as ‘Hail Gladdening Light’ or ‘O Resplendent Light’. There is a thread woven through this album and this is the beginning – the history of music in the Christian church. DC*B does have some history with this hymn. There exists documentation of it recorded in 1998 by DC*B (then appearing as the UBC band) at a club (Caravan of Dreams) in downtown Ft. Worth. Later, in the year 2001, DC*B would participate in a weekly gathering of college students in Atlanta Georgia referred to as Passion on the Hill. Each gathering would begin with a recitation of this hymn and the lighting of the lamp.' |
