The following is to serve as a formal introduction to the Lime CD. The short explanation is simply - if you mix just the right amounts of the colors green and yellow, you will be rewarded with a lovely shade of lime. And in a way, that’s what we did. We took two quasi-unreleased EPs (the Green and the Yellow, respectively) and combined them to produce (insert triumphant pause), the Lime CD!
The stories of the Green and Yellow CDs are pretty similar. Both were mixed by our dear friend Shane Wilson. Both are free of any over-dubs. Both were originally intended as bonus gifts for the release weeks of our two studio records, Can You Hear Us? and Illuminate. Both were given out to the kind folks that came to the release parties and pre-ordered the albums online. And both CDs are sort of time capsules of the band’s live performance (with a couple of goodies thrown in for good measure).
Recorded in Irvine, California, on the first Passion Experience tour, the Green CD was a nice little peek into the typical performance style from fall, 2001. For instance, we haven’t played Joyful Noise studio 54 style in quite some time. It begins with Dave doing the “I Will Not Be Silent” tag, and then launches into an 80’s disco deal (one of our better beginnings, surely) and a driving beat ala Staying Alive. Nowadays it has a completely different vibe, but more on that soon...
The live portion of the Yellow CD was recorded in Atlanta in the spring of 2003 at a place called the Attic during the Passion Thirsty conference. The rest of the disc was made up of two unreleased B-sides. The End of October got its name for two reasons. One, it sounds overcast and distant, and two, most of it was written at the end of the month of October 2002. It sat on a computer unheard by anyone for several months, until we decided on a whim to try part of it as an intro for Joyful Noise (hence doing away with the disco style intro as documented on the Green CD). The sampling and scratching came about when we were finishing up the enhanced portion of Illuminate and needed a song to play in the background of the menu page. Since the whole thing was programmed using the software Reason (the demo of which was the enhanced part of the CD), we decided to flesh out October and use it. Hogan and Jeremy used a program called Live, which is distributed by M-audio along with Reason, to record in the scratching and samples. Jeremy went in later and refined the beats and nuances of the arrangement. The recording was all done during a lunch break at the DCLA conference in Sacramento. Finally, the version of Heaven Came Down that made it on the Yellow CD is a demo that David recorded at Blue Note Studios, which is in our home church, UBC, and is owned and operated by our good pal Chris Long. We used this demo as the scratch track during the recording of Illuminate for arrangement and sequencing. The acoustic loops at the end of the Illuminate version are from this demo.
So there you have it. Green and Yellow, coming together to form a nice shade of Lime. And hopefully, a nice little listening experience as well.
Cheers,
-The DCB
